Red lentil and carrot purée
- Age: 6–8 months (First tastes)
- Texture: Purée
- Prep: 5 min
- Cook: 20 min
- Makes: 4 portions
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp red lentils, rinsed
- 1 medium carrot
- 200 ml water or unsalted stock
Contains: None of the common allergens
Method
- Rinse the lentils under cold water until it runs clear.
- Peel and dice the carrot small. Put lentils, carrot and water in a small pan.
- Simmer 18–20 minutes until the lentils have collapsed and the carrot is completely soft.
- Blend smooth, adding a little water if it is stiffer than a thick yoghurt.
- Cool to lukewarm before serving.
Safety: Unsalted stock only. Ordinary stock cubes carry far more salt than a baby can handle.
Storage: Fridge 2 days, freezer 1 month.
Tip: Iron matters more than most first-food advice admits: a baby's own stores start running down at around six months, and lentils are one of the best plant sources.
