Baby dal
- Age: 8–10 months (New textures)
- Texture: Mash
- Prep: 3 min
- Cook: 20 min
- Makes: 4 portions
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp red lentils, rinsed
- 1 pinch ground turmeric
- 1 pinch ground cumin
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 250 ml water
Contains: None of the common allergens
Method
- Simmer the lentils with the spices in the water, 20 minutes, until collapsed and thick.
- Stir in the oil.
- Mash lightly — dal is lumpy by nature. Cool to lukewarm.
Safety: Spices, yes; salt and chilli, no.
Storage: Fridge 3 days, freezer 1 month.
Tip: Mild spice is not just allowed but useful: a baby who meets cumin and turmeric now is a toddler who eats what the family eats. Salt and chilli are the only things to leave out.
